While adult teeth are meant to last a lifetime, sometimes removal of a tooth is the ideal treatment option. There may be significant decay rendering it unrestorable, gum disease resulting in compromised support for the tooth, or a fracture extending below the gum line which cannot be repaired. Teeth can also sometimes be removed for orthodontic purposes, or if they can adversely affect other teeth or pose a risk of infection (wisdom teeth).

If a tooth requires extraction, we first thoroughly numb the area around it so that you feel no pain during the procedure. We then “luxate” it, or move the tooth from side to side, until it is loose and easy to lift out. Sometimes we will cut the tooth into two or more pieces to remove it safely, especially if it has several roots going in different directions.
Every case is different, and after the tooth is removed your dentist will review with you what to expect. Generally, it is quite normal for there to be a small amount of discomfort right when the freezing wears off, and some patients will take an ibuprofen or acetaminophen at that time. Bleeding or swelling is usually minimal, although your dentist can tell you what to expect with your specific case.
Some teeth are important for function or aesthetics, and therefore replacing the tooth will be recommended. The first molar for example, is very important for chewing, so not replacing it could result in tooth drift and an unbalanced bite. Other teeth however, like wisdom teeth, are rarely replaced. To ensure there are no surprises later on, your dentist will address whether your tooth will need replacement prior to your tooth removal.
Although tooth extractions are always a last resort, Paramount Dental is pleased to offer the convenience of tooth extraction procedures when it becomes necessary or is recommended by your dentist.
