A dental bridge is a dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by permanently joining to adjacent teeth or dental implants.
There are several different types of dental bridges, depending on how they are made and the way in which they anchor to adjacent teeth. Bridges are most commonly fabricated outside of the mouth and cemented into place afterwards.
A dental bridge is fabricated by first conservatively reducing the teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth (abutment teeth). This is done in order to accommodate the material to be used to restore the shape and size of the original teeth so that there is correct alignment and contact with the opposing teeth. Next, an impression is taken and sent off to a lab for processing. The new bridge is usually ready within 1-2 weeks. To ensure the teeth are protected and esthetics are maintained, a temporary bridge is made in-office while the bridge is being created in the lab. Once the final bridge is ready, the temporary bridge is removed, and the final bridge is permanently cemented.
Not only does a bridge restore function and esthetics, but it also prevents the surrounding teeth from drifting out of position and fills spaces that would otherwise leave surrounding teeth susceptible to tooth decay. The best candidate for a dental bridge is someone with one or more missing teeth and good overall dental hygiene. It is important to pay special attention to hygiene at home, particularly flossing under the dental bridge. Furthermore, it is important to complete dental visits, including professional cleanings, every six months.
